Construction industry calls for more government recognition

Housebuilders have called on the government to recognise the contribution that they are making in reaching the targets set to reduce the housing crisis. They say that the negative rhetoric that currently surrounds the construction industry is unhelpful and could promote anti-housebuilder campaigners and that it fails to take into account the good work that has been done.

Satisfaction scores released recently suggest that build quality is improving within the construction sector and that customers are more likely to recommend their builder. Other evidence shows that private sector builders are producing 50% of all affordable housing amounting to contributions of £6bn per year including other infrastructure for the local economy. In addition, tens of thousands of new employees are recruited and trained and record numbers of planning permissions have been granted in a bid to meet the targets set by the government. The industry believes that the government should be recognising this progress within the private sector and work with them to gain more public support.

Stewart Baseley from the Home Builders Federation says that the government has noted the need for more housing and that the housebuilding industry has risen to the challenge with huge increases in supply - including contributions to local infrastructure and amenities. This has included increases in training and recruitment to help deliver Government promises. However constant criticism of the industry has resulted in negative perceptions making it more difficult to deal with local authorities and anti-development lobbies.

The industry points out that recent successes include 217,000 new homes in the year to April 2017 and a 2% increase in the numbers of people who would recommend a builder to a friend to 86%. This is in addition to increases in planning permission approvals and huge rises in training and recruitment.
